New Year at Kirkcudbright

We kicked off 2025 with a fantastic few days in South-West Scotland. Predominantly cold, crisp and clear weather made for some superb conditions for photographing the local red squirrels at Barrhill Woods. I never tire of watching these charming, cheeky characters!

New year’s day itself coincided with a big solar storm, and although we missed the best of the short but spectacularly bright northern lights display, we did catch sight of a beautiful glow from the hills above the town.

A classic squirrel pose!

As beautiful as the reds are, I always find their feet a bit freaky!

Winter is the best time to see the fluffy ear tufts of these delightful animals.
